What are SWESO & SWELL?

A brief explanation of Orienteering and the SWESO and SWELL leagues:

  • Orienteering means maps, forests and adventure. You can walk, jog or run and choosing your route to the red and white markers is fun. It does not matter how old, young or fit you are - you go at your own pace. If you like excitement, fresh air and exploring the countryside then Orienteering could be the sport for you.

  • Orienteering can best be described as competitive navigation on foot. You find their way around a course going from point to point using a specially drawn large scale map and a compass. No expensive kit is needed - just sensible outdoor clothes (long trousers are compulsory at most events) and a good pair of trainers. You will also need a red pen to copy down your course, a clear polythene bag to put the map in, in case it rains, and a whistle for safety purposes.

  • Getting started is easy. Each league event has three courses. If you are new to the sport, you can start with the beginners’ course of about three kilometres, and when you get more confident, you can move up to the intermediate course of about four kilometres. In addition, there is a long course of about five kilometres, aimed at the experienced orienteer.

SWESO

  • SWESO stands for South and West Essex Schools Orienteering. We now have ten events each year, held on either a Saturday or Sunday between September and April each year and in addition there is a end-of-season event in May, when the certificates and trophies are presented. When the events started, nearly all our competitors came from local schools, but the mix of competitors has changed and we now have several different types of group competing, as well as individual juniors.

  • At events there is one course for runners of Junior School age and three others for those of Secondary School age. At each event, there is a parallel competition for adults, called SWELL. We have also produced a series of leaflets to help people start Orienteering.

SWELL

  • SWELL stands for South and West Essex Local League. This is a new venture for the Chigwell and Epping Forest (CHIG), and Havering and South Essex (HAVOC) orienteering clubs. Each club puts on four events during the season in Essex, and with two events in North Kent, put on by Dartford Orienteering Klub (DFOK), we have ten events each year, held on either a Saturday or Sunday between September and April each year. In addition there is a end-of-season event in May, when the certificates and trophies are presented.

  • This competition is intended for adults, but each event, there is a parallel competition for children – see SWESO for details. We have also produced a series of leaflets to help people start Orienteering.
